Abstract
This paper aims to investigate the `intrinsic
F0' and `intrinsic duration' of Korean vowels.
Nonsense words with 7 vowels and 3 types
of syllable structure were recorded both
in isolation and in a carrier sentence by
3 native speakers.
The results showed that:
(1) close vowels have a higher F0 than open
vowels,
(2) [u] has a higher F0 than [i] (in most
data),
(3) [u] has a higher F0 than [ɯ] (in one subject's data),
(4) intrinsic F0 differences between open
and close vowels are larger in the closed
syllable with syllable-final [m] than in
the open syllable, and
(5) close vowels have shorter duration than
open vowels.
(1), (2), (3) and (5) agree with other languages'
data in the previous studies, while (4) needs
further investigation with more data.
